Stan Emmons
Music has been a vital part of Stan Emmons’ life since childhood. Growing up in Tucson, Arizona, as the son of a Presbyterian minister, he began his musical journey in the church youth choir. His passion blossomed in school, where he joined the chorus and experimented with his brother’s Hawaiian guitar, crafting folk songs. The vibrant music scene of the 1960s inspired him to play at parties, hoping to impress the girls—after all, if you can’t dance, you need a backup plan!
By the 1980s, Stan transitioned to performing professionally, starting in a duo before joining his first band, Possum Hollow, where he played Bluegrass and “rural favorites.” He later joined the Saddle Pals and was invited to perform in the Columbia Actors Repertory production of “Lost Highway,” portraying the guitarist in Hank Williams’ band. This experience sparked a passion for theater, leading him to appear in productions like “Woody Guthrie’s American Song,” “Smoke on the Mountain,” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” He also performed with Sierra Rep in shows like “Gold Dust” and “Smokey Joe’s Cafe,” where his dancing skills were humorously critiqued.
With over 25 years of experience, Stan has played guitar and bass in various bands, including the Lost Highway Band, The Barn Dogs, and The Black Irish Band. His style blends country soul and rock and roll, allowing him to traverse the works of legends like Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, and Elvis Presley.
Now, Stan is at the pinnacle of his musical journey with The ElderBerries, a project that unites old friends and former bandmates who share a deep love for music. The moment he heard his bandmates’ harmonies, he was hooked.
Outside of music, Stan is an accomplished furniture maker and a pretty good cook, though he humorously admits that dancing is not one of his talents. Join us in celebrating Stan Emmons, a true musical craftsman and a cherished member of The ElderBerries!
